As we welcome the summer season, June brings an important reminder to take care of something we often take for granted—our brain health. This month is recognized nationwide as Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month, a time to shine a light on Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia that touch so many lives.

Whether you’ve been personally affected or simply want to show support, there are meaningful ways to get involved, learn, and connect—right here in Chevy Chase.

What Is Alzheimer’s?

Alzheimer’s is a progressive disease that impacts memory, thinking, and behavior. It’s the most common form of dementia, and while there’s no cure yet, early support and ongoing care can make a big difference in quality of life—for individuals and their families.

You don’t need to be a medical expert to help. Just being informed and compassionate goes a long way.

How You Can Take Part

1. Wear Purple

The color purple represents Alzheimer’s awareness. Something as simple as a purple shirt or scarf can spark a conversation.

2. Share What You Know

Talk to friends and neighbors. Many people feel isolated when dealing with memory loss—your understanding can help them feel seen.

3. Focus on Brain Health

It’s never too late to take care of your mind. Simple habits like walking, staying socially active, or doing crosswords can help keep your brain sharp.
