October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. There are many resources available to you in Alexandria, including education, access to early screenings, and treatment programs.

  • Although significantly less common, men can also get breast cancer

Breast Cancer Risk Factors

The cause of breast cancer is unknown. there are factors linked with a higher-than-average risk of developing the disease. Some risk factors are genetic and can’t be changed. Several factors are improvable by making healthy lifestyle choices. Read below for a list of known risk factors.

  • Gender – women are much more likely to develop the disease
  • Age – the older you are the more likely it is you develop it
  • Family history – women with close relatives who have had breast cancer have an increased risk
  • Previous radiation exposure – If you had treatment for something else that involved radiation to the chest or face
  • Race – white women are more likely to develop it, however, black women are more likely to get a more aggressive form
  • Being overweight
  • Drinking alcohol
  • Lack of exercise
  • Smoking

Founded on the belief that education, access, and technology can help address the high rates of incidence and mortality in the region. They are building a team of providers to help provide access to screenings and treatments at a price all can afford. They aim to touch more lives and improve the availability and quality of care for breast cancer.

American Cancer Society – The American Cancer Society has branches across the United States, including one here in Virginia. They are a great resource for anything you may be looking for. They provide access to local resources such as transportation, advocacy, information, and lodging. In addition to those, they also highlight recent local events, volunteer opportunities, and local statistics regarding cancer in Virginia.

Inova Breast Cancer Program – Is a leading nonprofit healthcare provider in Northern Virginia. Inova’s breast cancer program is a nationally recognized treatment program. Accredited by the American College of Surgeons National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC). They provide highly specialized care with multiple locations throughout Northern Virginia, from risk assessment and prevention to diagnosis and treatment.

Every Women’s Life – A public health program that helps uninsured, low-income women gain access to free breast and cervical cancer screening services. They’ve served over 75,000 individuals in Virginia. Making a large impact in helping improve early detection, reduce death rates, improve treatment options, and increase survival rates.
