The CDC reports that 1 in 4 adults in the United States do not have social and emotional support.
What Are the Dangers of Social Isolation and Loneliness?
Social isolation and loneliness are defined as two different experiences. Social isolation is a state of being that occurs when someone doesn’t have relationships or connections in their life. They may not have support from others. Loneliness is a feeling of being disconnected from others.
Those with mental and physical challenges like chronic diseases, mental illnesses, and other disabilities may have a higher risk of experiencing social isolation and loneliness. Major life events and health issues can also lead to increased isolation. The risk is higher for older adults and those living alone. Frequent social isolation and loneliness can increase the risk of:
- Heart disease
- Stroke
- Type 2 diabetes
- Depression
- Anxiety
Since social isolation can be a source of stress and depression, it can also increase the risk of developing different types of dementia, like Alzheimer’s disease. Those who report being lonely have more instances of cognitive decline and memory impairment.
How Can I Prevent Social Isolation and Loneliness?
It’s important to maintain regular contact with others and have interactions consistently if you’re able to. For seniors, those who prevent social isolation by maintaining connections and interactions are more resilient to dementia.
Here are some ideas you and your loved ones can use to maintain connections and make new ones:
- Adult education classes
- Arts and crafts sessions
- Book clubs
- Other hobby groups like music or hiking
- Volunteering
Winter is just around the corner, so consider making some plans with your senior friends and loved ones to help them combat social isolation and loneliness during a challenging time of the year.
