Find ideas to celebrate Grandparents Day together.

Each year, we honor National Grandparents Day on the Sunday after Labor Day. This was designated in 1978 by the United States Congress. Much of the effort to establish this day can be attributed to Marian McQuade. Marian, who started a campaign to recognize grandparents in 1970, reached out to community leaders to establish the holiday. Now, thanks to Marian and all those involved, we have a special day just for our grandparents.

We want to honor all the Grandparents in St. Charles, St. Louis, and Warren Counties this month. We’ve put together a list of senior discounts available in the area. Whether you’re celebrating Grandparents Day, or you just want to enjoy time together, check out the list below.

Education

  • Through the Missouri Senior Scholarship, St. Louis Community College offers discounted tuition for adults over the age of 65. Some classes available this fall include American Heart Association (AHA) CPR, computer literacy, and wills, trusts, and probate. Make sure to visit the admissions office by the Friday before the start of classes!
  • St. Charles Community College also has a program specifically designed for those age 60+. It’s called Senior QUEST (Questioning, Understanding, Enriching, Socializing, Thinking). There are 9 classes left in the Fall 2026 semester. Each class is free – you just have to register!

Movie Theaters

  • Seniors over the age of 60 can save on tickets at the AMC Creve Coeur 12 theater. The theater is located at 10465 Olive Boulevard, Creve Coeur, Missouri 63141. Make sure to bring a valid ID with you. You can show your ID at the box office to claim the discount.
  • Some Marcus Theatres® and Movie Tavern locations also offer discounts for seniors. At the St. Charles Cinema, those over 60 can enjoy discounted tickets and concessions every Friday before 4:00 p.m. You can find this theater at 1830 South 1st Capitol Drive in St. Charles.

Senior Centers

  • The St. Charles Senior Center is open Monday – Friday from 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. Lunch is served each day at 11:00 a.m., and you can view the menu online. Make sure to call ahead to make a lunch reservation! They also update their calendar of activities every month. In September 2026, you can enjoy bingo and other games. They also have craft groups, music time, and exercise sessions. Visit the center at 1455 Fairgrounds Road, St. Charles, MO 63301.
  • You can check out the St. Louis Activity Center at 5602 Arsenal Street in St. Louis, MO. Some of the activities coming up on their calendar include exercise classes, bowling, and crafts. Lunch is served most days at 11:30 a.m. (besides Tuesdays).

Other Ideas

Not seeing any activities that your grandparent would enjoy? Here are some more ideas from Generations United:

  • Arts & Crafts: Find an easy craft, like coloring books or paint-by-numbers, for example.
  • Cooking: Family recipes offer a great way to connect.
  • Games & Puzzles: You can talk about old memories over a board game or puzzle.
  • Light Exercise: If it’s nice out, put on some sunscreen and take a walk outside. Or, visit a local park or walking trail.
  • Reading: Narrate a book for your grandparent, or read passages together.
