Managing Parkinson’s Symptoms in Scottsdale
Category:
April is Parkinson’s Awareness Month. Do you know how to manage symptoms of one of the most common neurological disorders?
Parkinson’s disease is a movement disorder affecting the nervous system that worsens over time. There is currently no cure for the disease, although scientists are actively looking for one. The disease works by attacking the cells that produce the chemical dopamine. Dopamine is used to send movement signals throughout the nervous system to other parts of the body. That means when those cells are damaged or destroyed, movement throughout the body will likely be affected. Thus, you may start to notice the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease.
Symptoms
The symptoms of Parkinson’s disease can look different in everyone. When first diagnosed, typically you will have milder symptoms, or you may not even notice them. Oftentimes, symptoms will start on one side of the body before spreading to both. Typically, one side of the body will remain more impacted throughout the progression of the disease. Common symptoms include:
- Tremors
- Slowed movement
- Rigid muscles
- Poor balance
- Speech changes
- Writing changes
- Depression
- Anxiety
- Constipation
- Sleep troubles
- Trouble smelling
- Memory trouble
- Fatigue
Risk Factors
While the exact cause is still unknown, researchers believe that Parkinson’s is caused by a combination of factors.
- Genetics – researchers estimate about 30% of Parkinson’s risk is genetic.
- Environment – head injuries and exposure to certain pesticides have been linked with an increased chance of developing Parkinson’s.
- Age – since our cells become more susceptible to damage as we age, getting older can lead to an increased risk.
- Gender – men are more likely to develop Parkinson’s than women.
Managing Symptoms
Symptoms of Parkinson’s will not likely look the same in everyone. They can vary in intensity and how quickly they progress. Generally, there will be some motor-inhibiting symptoms that affect your everyday movement. There are several strategies commonly used to help manage these symptoms.
Exercising can make a huge difference in maintaining your mobility. The best exercises to do include swimming, cycling, dancing, and non-contact boxing. Other exercise routines of walking, strength training, and Tai Chi, can help improve mobility, balance, and coordination.
Choosing a healthy diet can also make a big impact. Strive to eat several servings of fruit and vegetables each day. Additionally, you should aim to consume plenty of water or other non-alcoholic beverages. Stay away from highly caffeinated beverages, though. Adding antioxidants to your daily eating habits is also beneficial.
