March is Brain Injury Awareness Month. A time to provide education about traumatic brain injuries (TBI), promote services available, and increase awareness of the consequences.

Traumatic brain injuries are the main focus of Brain Injury Awareness Month. We want to provide some facts about what they are and a local resource for Veterans who may be suffering from one. They can affect anyone of any age but are most prevalent in older adults. Read below to learn more.

Facts About Traumatic Brain Injuries

  • A TBI is an injury that affects how the brain works. This means in order for a head injury to be classified as a TBI, the brain’s functioning must be altered.
  • They can be caused by a blow to the head or a penetrating injury to the skull. Most likely due to a fall, car crash, or assault.
  • Mild TBI is also known as a concussion.
  • Most people with mild TBI can recover safely at home.
  • Those with moderate to severe TBI may need ongoing care.
  • TBIs can affect anyone of any age; however, groups that are most likely to be impacted include: people living in rural areas, racial and ethnic minorities, and service members and Veterans.

The VA and Brain Injuries

If you are a Veteran living with a TBI, the Southern Arizona VA Health Care System is a Polytrauma/TBI Network Site. They provide post-acute rehabilitation services to eligible Veterans across Arizona, New Mexico, and Southern California. Thus, if you are living in Scottsdale and looking for care for your brain injury, you may be eligible for their services. Whether you are transitioning from a higher-level rehab center after severe TBI or are seeking services after mild-moderate TBI, their team balances access and expertise to provide tailored rehabilitation care to meet patients’ physical, cognitive, and mental health needs after head trauma. The Department of Veterans Affairs estimates that 15%-20% of those who served in Iraq and Afghanistan have experienced a TBI.
