Caring for Caregivers: Resources for Family Caregivers
Category:
In October we observe Emotional Wellness Month—a time to pause and reflect on how we manage and
express our feelings, navigate life’s ups and downs, and care for our own well-being. For Hawaii’s family
caregivers, this reminder carries special importance. Caregivers across Oahu and the neighbor islands
dedicate their time and hearts to caring for loved ones of all ages. Yet, too often, caregivers neglect their
own health and wellness in the process.
At Griswold Home Care for Oahu, we believe caring for the caregiver is as important as caring for the
person in their care. Without daily practices to maintain emotional wellness, burnout can take hold,
leaving family caregivers feeling exhausted, overwhelmed, and isolated, and weighing on caregivers’
own health and wellbeing. The good news is that a wealth of local and online resources are available to
help caregivers nurture their own wellbeing while still ensuring their loved ones receive the care they
need.
When You Need a Break, We’re Here to Help
If you are caring for a loved one and feeling the weight of exhaustion, remember it is okay to take time
for yourself. You deserve a moment to rest, recharge, and restore your energy—so you can continue
caring from a place of strength and love. When you need that break, reach out to Griswold Home Care
for Oahu. Our compassionate caregivers can step in to provide trusted, professional support for your
loved one, giving you the peace of mind to focus on your own well-being and others in your ohana.
Embrace Local Support Networks
Oahu is home to a number of strong community-based caregiver programs. One of the largest is the
Lanakila Multi-Purpose Senior Center. Operated by Catholic Charities Hawaii, it offers various classes,
educational workshops, cultural clubs, and one-on-one counseling for family caregivers. Membership is
free for adults 60 years and older. The Senior Center provides a safe space to learn, share stories,
exchange advice, and simply talk story with others who understand. For many seniors, the programs and
services that promote healthy aging, and the connections made at the Senior Center are lifelines.
Seek Respite Care—Without Guilt
Hiring a professional home care agency to provide respite care gives family caregivers the opportunity to
rest and recharge while ensuring their loved one remains in capable hands. Allowing family members to
step away to tend to their own needs or the needs of their other family members is vital to the health
and wellbeing of the whole family. Self-care is not selfish, and respite care is available for individuals and
families needing a break for just a few hours a day to 24/7 care to take a much needed vacation.
Nurture Mind, Body, and Spirit
Hawaii’s natural beauty offers countless ways to restore the soul—morning swims, sunset walks, or
meditation in the park. Pair these or other restorative practices with mindfulness for resilience and
healthy coping. Remember: small actions, breathing deeply, journaling, or asking for help, can have a
big impact on your overall well-being.
