Alzheimer’s disease is common. Chances are, you know someone who has been affected, a parent, grandparent, friend, or neighbor.

In fact, more than 7 million Americans live with Alzheimer’s today. As our population ages, this number will keep growing. Every community feels the impact. That’s why it’s so important to raise awareness and offer support for families facing this disease.

September is World Alzheimer’s Month, a time to raise awareness, recognize those living with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia, and honor their families and Caregivers. To put things in perspective: the Alzheimer’s Association reports that Alzheimer’s now claims more lives each year than breast cancer and prostate cancer combined. That’s why increasing awareness and support is so critical for our community and for the millions of families affected.

At Griswold Home Care for NEPA, we provide non-medical home care that helps seniors stay independent and comfortable at home. Many of our Caregivers are experienced in supporting individuals with memory loss, offering compassionate care tailored to each person’s needs. Read on to discover upcoming local events in NEPA to support Alzheimer’s and how Griswold can support your loved ones.

Get Involved

The annual Alzheimer’s Walk in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre is just around the corner! The walk brings our community together, showing support, and making a real impact for those affected by Alzheimer’s. This year’s walk will take place on Saturday, October 17th at PNC Field in Moosic, and will be a day filled with hope and remembrance.

Participating in the Walk is more than just taking steps, it’s a chance to honor loved ones, share stories, and join forces with neighbors who are passionate about finding a cure. The funds raised during the event play a vital role in supporting the Alzheimer’s Association’s mission to advance care, provide resources and support to families, and drive crucial research toward prevention and treatment.

There are many ways to get involved: gather a team of friends or colleagues, walk in honor or memory of someone special or make a donation if you can’t attend in person. Every bit of support, big or small, helps bring us closer to a world without Alzheimer’s disease. Together, we can make a meaningful difference for our loved ones and our NEPA community.

The Alzheimer’s Association also needs volunteers to help with event set-up, registration, water stations, the Promise Garden, and more. This is a wonderful opportunity to give back and connect with others, learn more here.

Promise Garden

During the Walk, each registered participant receives a Promise Garden flower. The color of your flower represents your personal connection to Alzheimer’s disease:

  • Blue represents someone living with Alzheimer’s or another dementia
  • Purple is for those who have lost someone to the disease.
  • Yellow represents someone who is currently supporting or caring for a person living with Alzheimer’s.
  • Orange is for those who support the cause and the Association’s vision of a world without Alzheimer’s and all other dementia.

Together, these flowers create a beautiful display of rememberance and community, reminding us that no one walks this journey alone.

Griswold Can Help

Facing Alzheimer’s and dementia is never easy, especially as families navigate the early stages and begin to accept that their loved one needs support. Early on, individuals may need occasional reminders or help with daily tasks and personal care, while later stages often require much more hands-on assistance. Behavioral changes are common, and families may feel overwhelmed trying to provide the best care possible.

That’s where Griswold can help. Our compassionate caregivers are trained to provide Dementia Support care services including:

  • Reintroduce themselves every time they arrive
  • Prepare meals that accommodate struggles with utensils
  • Stimulate short-term memory through cognitive activities
  • Interact with them in their version of reality
  • Help them recall a life well-lived
