As the number of adults over 65 grows, more experience social isolation and loneliness.

Did you know that nearly one in four Americans aged 65 and older who live independently are considered socially isolated? In addition, almost half of adults aged 60 and older report feeling lonely. As the population of adults aged 65 and older continues to grow, so does a concerning trend: more adults are experiencing social isolation and frequently feel lonely.

While loneliness and social isolation are related, they are not the same. Loneliness is the feeling of being alone, while social isolation refers to having few social connections. It’s possible to feel lonely in a crowd or feel content while living alone. Older adults are especially vulnerable to both, often due to health changes, reduced mobility, or the loss of loved ones.

During the holiday season, life tends to get even busier, with family members traveling, last-minute shopping, and wrapping up end-of-year responsibilities. With so much going on, it’s easy for seniors to feel overlooked or left alone, even unintentionally. At Griswold, we are committed to ensuring that no senior feels lonely during these hectic times. Loneliness can significantly impact a senior’s well-being, but support is available. Our respite care services are designed to provide relief and companionship, offering an extra hand when you need it most. Read on to discover how Griswold can help make this holiday season brighter and more connected for your loved one.

Loneliness in Seniors Health Risks

Loneliness and social isolation can put older adults’ health at risk. Individuals who are socially isolated or lonely are more likely to be admitted to an emergency room. Social isolation and loneliness are associated with higher risks for:

  • High blood pressure
  • Heart disease
  • Obesity
  • Weakened immune system
  • Anxiety and or depression
  • Dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease

It’s important for seniors to spend time with others as often as possible, as social interaction is crucial for emotional and physical well-being.

How Can Seniors Stay Connected?

Staying connected is essential for seniors. Staying active also means reaching out to others and participating in enjoyable activities, whether by rekindling a favorite hobby or exploring something new through classes or clubs. As people age, not everyone can manage everything on their own, so seeking support and community is important.

Local offices of aging and community centers often offer a variety of resources and programs, making it easier for seniors to remain engaged and informed. Learn more about our surrounding offices of aging:

Luzerne County Office of Aging offers health and wellness, including exercise classes. Check out their 2025 calendar to learn more here.

Lackawanna County Area on Aging offers a weekly calendar schedule with community events for seniors. You can look at the weekly calendar schedule here.

While events at senior centers are helpful, they aren’t available around the clock. Social connections are vital, and when that’s a challenge, Griswold is here to step in and help.
