Breast Cancer Awareness Month in Montgomery County
Category:
Chances are that you know at least one person who has been personally affected by breast cancer.
According to the American Cancer Association, 1 in 8 women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. Globally, 2.4 million women are affected by this disease. Breast Cancer Awareness Month, observed each October, is about more than just pink ribbons. This month is a time to honor those who have faced breast cancer and to educate our community about risk factors, promote regular screenings, and support ongoing research and aid efforts.
At Griswold, we offer non-medical home care services for you or a loved one who may need extra help. Read on for breast cancer signs and symptoms, local resources in Montgomery County, and how Griswold can help.
Breast Cancer Signs and Symptoms
Early detection will save lives. According to the American Cancer Society, the most common symptom of breast cancer is a new lump or mass. Typically, if the mass is hard and not painful when touched, it is more likely to be cancer. Although, that is not always the case as breast cancer lumps can be soft to the touch, round, and painful. While most think a lump or mass is the giveaway for breast cancer, other symptoms may include:
- A new lump, mass, or thickening in or near the breast or in the underarm area (armpit)
- An unexplained change in the size or shape of the breast
- Swelling or shrinkage of all or part of the breast, especially if on one side only (even if no lump is felt)
- Dimpling anywhere on the breast
- Swollen lymph nodes under the arm or near the collarbone
- Scaly, red, or swollen skin on the breast
If you notice any of the above symptoms, talk to your doctor immediately.
