National Family Caregiver Month, observed every November, honors and recognizes the contributions of family caregivers across the nation. This month is a time to acknowledge their efforts, highlight the everyday challenges they navigate, and advocate for more support. A key focus is preventing caregiver burnout and ensuring they have access to the help they need.
Family Caregiver Fast Facts
According to The National Alliance for Caregiving and AARP’s Caregiving in the US 2025 research report, 63 million Americans are caregivers, a 50% increase since 2015. As the population ages, the demand for care continues to rise, creating a widening gap between those who need support and the resources available to deliver it. Additional findings from the report include:
- Nearly one in four family caregivers experienced feelings of isolation on their caregiving journey
- Seven out of ten family caregivers are employed, but may experience work disruptions and lack access to supportive benefits
- Family caregivers spend an average of 27 hours per week providing care, and nearly one in four provide 40 or more hours a week
- Women make up about 61% of family caregivers
Caregiver Burnout Signs
Burnout is a state of emotional exhaustion that results from excessive demands on one’s energy, strength, or resources. According to the Caregiving in the U.S. 2025 research report, 36% of family caregivers report high emotional stress. It’s important to stay aware of the following burnout signs:
- Feeling overwhelmed or drained
- Neglecting one’s own finances or work
- Losing optimism
- Feeling hopeless
- Getting sick more frequently
- Changes in sleep patterns
- Irritability
