When a loved one starts needing help at home, families often ask:
“What’s the difference between Medicare and Medicare Advantage—and will either cover care?”

Understanding this can save you time, stress, and unexpected costs.

What Is Traditional Medicare?

Traditional Medicare (also called Original Medicare) is the federal health insurance program for seniors 65+.

It includes:

  • Part A (Hospital Insurance) – covers hospital stays, rehab, limited home health care
  • Part B (Medical Insurance) – covers doctor visits, outpatient care, therapy

What It Covers for Home Care

Medicare may cover:

  • Short-term skilled nursing care
  • Physical or occupational therapy
  • Home health services ordered by a doctor

What It Does NOT Cover

Medicare does not cover:

  • Ongoing help with bathing, dressing, or toileting
  • Companion care
  • Meal prep or light housekeeping

👉 This is where many Tampa families are caught off guard (Note: There is a new pilot program for those onTraditional Medicare that have a diganosis of Dementia that provides about 72 hours of Respite care annually. Call us for details)

What Is Medicare Advantage?

Medicare Advantage (Part C) is offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare.

Plans often include:

  • Everything in Original Medicare
  • Additional benefits (dental, vision, sometimes transportation)
  • Managed care networks

Does Medicare Advantage Cover Home Care?

Some plans may offer limited non-medical support, such as:

  • Short-term in-home assistance
  • Care coordination services

However:

  • Coverage is usually restricted (typrically after a hosital stay to reduce hospital readmission)
  • Services may require approval
  • Care hours are often very limited

👉 It is not designed for ongoing daily care at home.

What This Means for Families in Tampa

Whether you have Traditional Medicare or Medicare Advantage:

👉 Neither typically covers long-term, non-medical home care

That includes the services most families actually need:

  • Help getting dressed
  • Fall prevention and supervision
  • Companionship
  • Support for dementia or memory loss

The Gap Most Families Face

After a hospital stay, coverage may end quickly—but your loved one still needs help.

This is when families often turn to:

  • Private pay home care
  • Flexible, in-home support
  • Care that starts immediately without approvals
