San Antonio Families | End-of-Life Planning & Grief Support

At Griswold Home Care, our Family Resource Series is designed to connect families with trusted local resources they may find valuable now or in the future—especially during life’s most challenging moments.

Our first guest in this series is Esther Pipoly, founder of Loss of Life Advocates (LOLA). Esther provides compassionate, practical help with sudden loss, as well as guidance for families whose loved one is nearing the end of life, navigating serious illness, or coping with an unexpected passing.

Meet Esther Pipoly, Founder of Loss of Life Advocates

Esther describes her role as a “concierge grief consultant.” In simple terms, she helps families prepare for, manage, and recover from major life transitions involving illness or loss.

LOLA supports families before, during, and after a loss by:

  • Helping organize legal, financial, and personal documents
  • Ensuring trusted individuals have access to accounts and decision-making authority
  • Guiding families through serious diagnoses such as cancer, stroke, heart attack, or COVID
  • Assisting with death certificate distribution and funeral home coordination
  • Supporting families with closing down a loved one’s affairs

Esther founded Loss of Life Advocates in 2017 after experiencing profound personal loss—her husband and father passed away just 63 days apart. While her father’s affairs were carefully planned, her husband’s sudden passing revealed a major gap in support. She didn’t have anyone to turn to for help with sudden loss.

“There was no one to tell me what to do first or how to do it,” Esther shared. “Not just emotionally—but practically.”

That experience inspired her to create a service focused on the overlooked details that can overwhelm families during grief.

Common Planning Mistakes Families Make

One of the biggest challenges Esther sees—especially when families are seeking help with sudden loss—is banking and access to funds after someone passes away.

Many families believe that having a will alone is enough. However, if accounts are not jointly held or designated with a Payable on Death (POD) beneficiary, loved ones may be forced into probate—an often costly and time-consuming process.

Probate expenses can range from $1,800 to more than $20,000, depending on the estate. Families are frequently shocked to learn they must pay these fees before accessing funds.

Esther strongly encourages families to:

  • Add trusted individuals to bank accounts when appropriate
  • Ensure executors have immediate access to funds
  • Review beneficiary designations regularly

These steps can prevent unnecessary stress and financial hardship during an already difficult time.

Navigating Loss During the COVID-19 Pandemic

The pandemic has introduced unique challenges for grieving families. Restrictions on hospital visits, virtual goodbyes, and limited funeral services have deeply impacted the grieving process.

Esther explained that families often fall into two categories:

  1. Those who hold smaller services using Zoom or live-streaming
  2. Those who choose cremation and postpone a celebration of life until restrictions ease

Many families are emotionally exhausted after weeks or months of limited communication with hospitalized loved ones. Esther believes we will continue to see long-term emotional effects, including grief-related PTSD, as families process these experiences.

Funeral homes and cemeteries are also navigating delays and safety protocols, adding further strain to families waiting for closure.

LOLA’s Mission: Giving Back

A common misconception is that Loss of Life Advocates is a nonprofit organization. While LOLA is a for-profit business, Esther is deeply committed to giving back.

For every service package purchased, LOLA donates hours to families who cannot afford support. Esther has also used grant funding to provide free services to families in crisis.

“My husband was the for-profit in our family,” Esther said. “After he passed, I had to build something sustainable—but with heart.”

An Unexpected Expansion of Services

In recent years, Esther’s work has expanded beyond illness-related loss. She now assists families affected by sudden tragedies, including house fires and accidents.

In one case, Esther served as the primary point of contact between a grieving family and multiple insurance adjusters after a fatal house fire. She managed communication, documentation, and insurance coordination—allowing the family to focus on healing. This experience confirmed that LOLA’s services can be provided effectively even outside San Antonio using virtual tools like Zoom and DocuSign.

How Loss of Life Advocates Supports Families

At its core, Loss of Life Advocates exists to give families space to grieve—without being consumed by paperwork, phone calls, and logistics. Ryan McGuire of Griswold Home Care noted, services like LOLA allow families to maintain their relationships with loved ones rather than becoming overwhelmed by administrative responsibilities during end-of-life care.
