Eat Well, Live Well: Senior Nutrition in the Poconos
Category:
March is National Nutrition Month, a time to focus on healthy eating and active living.
At Griswold, we understand that forming healthy habits can get tougher as we age. That’s why, as a non-medical home care provider for the Poconos, we encourage you and your loved ones to prioritize nutrition and wellness.
Eating well is more than just a daily routine. It is essential for sharp minds, strong bodies, and preventing illness. Because seniors often have less appetite and a slower metabolism, every meal matters. As adults age, their needs become more specific to maintain a healthy, happy life. Read on to learn the unique needs of seniors, nutritional weekly tips, and local resources in the Poconos to start on the right track.
Unique Needs of Seniors
As adults age, their needs become more specific to maintain a healthy, happy life. Learn these tips provided by the U.S. Department of Agriculture to start taking the right steps.
- Eat a variety of foods from all groups
- Choose foods low in added sugar, salt, and saturated fat
- Get enough protein to keep muscles strong
- Focus on key nutrients like calcium, vitamin D, fiber, and B12
- Drink water often, even if you’re not thirsty, as aging can reduce your sense of thirst
- Stay active and maintain a healthy weight
- Practice food safety when preparing meals
