Did you know September is World Alzheimer’s Awareness Month?

Alzheimer’s disease is a devastating neurological disorder that affects millions of families worldwide. There are more than 7 million Americans living with Alzheimer’s. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, by 2050, this number is projected to rise to nearly 13 million. As one of the leading causes of dementia, Alzheimer’s brings challenges, not only for those diagnosed but for Caregivers and communities as well. Raising awareness, supporting research, and building community in the Poconos are more important than ever.

In honor of World Alzheimer’s Month, our Griswold Home Care for the Poconos team joined the Walk to End Alzheimer’s in Monroe County. Our Community Liaison, Amelia, lead our team as Walk Captain.

At Griswold, we offer non-medical home care services to support older adults aging in place at home with independence and dignity. Our Caregivers are experienced in assisting seniors with Alzheimer’s, Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI), or other dementias throughout the Poconos and beyond. We understand the challenges, and we’re committed to supporting families every step of the way. Read on to learn about the early signs of Alzheimer’s, get a recap of the Walk to End Alzheimer’s, and discover local resources in the Poconos area.

The Walk to End Alzheimer’s Monroe County

On September 26th, our Griswold Home Care for the Poconos team joined hundreds of passionate advocates and families at Northampton Community College for the annual Walk to End Alzheimer’s in Monroe County. Despite the rainy weather, the community spirit remained strong and the turnout was great. There were several inspiring stories shared offering hope. Our Director, Amanda, and Community Liaison, Amelia, volunteered to help set up for the event, and shared more about Griswold care services to help support families who have loved ones facing the disease.

The Walk to End Alzheimer’s, organized by the Alzheimer’s Association, is the nation’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support, and research. Each year, more than 600 communities across the country unite for this inspiring cause. This year over 32 teams participated in the walk and the goal of $50,000 raised was surpassed! We’re proud to be part of this movement and look forward to continuing our involvement in Monroe County.

Local Resources

Staying involved in the Poconos means connecting with organizations that support families facing dementia. Two local resources include the Monroe County Dementia Coalition and Functional Cognitive Consulting. They work hand in hand, hosting joint events, workshops, and support initiatives throughout the region.

Monroe County Dementia Coalition: This coalition brings together individuals and professionals dedicated to education, advocacy, and support for people living with dementia and their Caregivers. In partnership with organizations like Functional Cognitive Consulting, they regularly coordinate local events, workshops, and resources for families.
