As summer temperatures climb, so does the risk for our aging loved ones. Seniors are especially vulnerable to heat-related illnesses because their bodies don’t adjust to sudden temperature changes as easily.

In fact, the CDC reports that adults over the age of 65 are more likely to suffer from heat stress, and around 36% of heat-related deaths each year occur in this age group.

That means when the days get hot and humid, keeping our loved ones safe isn’t just a good idea — it’s essential.

Dehydration

One of the biggest dangers is dehydration. Many seniors don’t feel thirst as strongly as they used to, which makes it easy for them to become dehydrated without even realizing it. This can quickly lead to dizziness, confusion, and even hospitalization. Simple steps like keeping cool water nearby, dressing in lightweight clothing, and avoiding peak heat hours (usually 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.) can make a huge difference. Still, it can be tough for families to monitor these things around the clock, especially when busy schedules pull us in so many directions.

Companion Assistance

That’s where having a companion in the home can provide peace of mind. A trusted caregiver or companion can help remind your loved one to drink fluids, keep an eye on air conditioning or fans, and make sure they’re staying cool and comfortable throughout the day. They can also provide companionship that encourages seniors to eat well, stay active indoors, and remain engaged — even when the weather outside makes it harder to get out.

At the end of the day, summer is a season to be enjoyed, not feared. With the right precautions and a little extra support, our loved ones can stay safe, happy, and healthy all season long. If you’re feeling stretched thin or worried about how your parent or grandparent will manage the heat, consider the benefits of having a companion in the home. Sometimes, that extra set of hands and caring presence makes all the difference.
