Staying Active in Ocean Pines

This is something that can become more difficult during the hot summer months, when being outdoors is more of a detriment to their health. That’s why we want to provide some local resources in Worcester County that host indoor activities throughout the summer. Whether it’s a light fitness class or arts and crafts, they are great activities to bring your aging parents to and can be fun for the whole family.

Community Center

One of the best places to go to keep cool and be engaged in activities is the Ocean Pines Community Center. Open Monday-Saturday, the center, which is operated by the Recreation and Parks Department, “Offers an array of year-round recreational and leisure activities for all ages and interests.”

An example activity that is designed for older adults is a senior-specific Zumba class. The Community Center also hosts a wide variety of seminars perfect for seniors. They have a balance & fall prevention class coming up in September. During the seminar, participants will learn strategies for better balance and how to decrease fall risk.

50plus Centers

The Worcester Commission on Aging operates four 50plus Centers throughout the county. Located in Ocean City, Snow Hill, Berlin, and Pocomoke. Activities and programs at each focus on staying active, energized, and empowered. With each center providing socialization, fresh meals, educational activities, and occasional trips throughout the county. Activities across the Centers include tai chi, light strength classes, Wii games, memory games, board games, bingo, and various groups such as gardening and walking clubs.

• Ocean City – They envision a place where older adults can enjoy a healthy, dynamic way of life. Where they can be socially connected and physically active.
• Snow Hill – They are a gathering place of diverse participants who strive to stay involved, engaged, and connected to the community.
• Berlin – Located a couple of blocks from downtown is the Berlin 50plus Center. Where you can stop in for socialization with friends and new acquaintances.
• Pocomoke – They provide local seniors opportunities for social interaction, emotional and physical support, meals, and nutrition assistance.
