Mental Health Support From Lakeville to Shakopee
Category:
We’re raising awareness throughout the month of May.
Since 1949, the month of May has been designated as Mental Health Month by Mental Health America. This year’s theme, “More Good Days, Together,” emphasizes the impact of connecting the right people to support at the right time. This is something that was incredibly important to our founder, Jean Griswold. After Jean found out an elderly woman in her community had died of complications because she didn’t have support, she established one of the first and most successful non-medical home care organizations in the country, now known as Griswold.
In honor of Jean and Mental Health Month, we’re challenging the stigma around mental health support. If you’re struggling, there are places to get support. Below, you’ll find more information about mental health, wellness, and resources you can access in Minnesota.
Older Adult Mental Health
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) explains that aging can make you more vulnerable to experiencing mental health conditions. This can be due to changes in mental and physical health or grieving the loss of a loved one. Here are some tips from SAMHSA’s online resource for older adults:
- Discuss what habits can best protect your health as you age with your doctor
- Ask your doctor questions about drug and alcohol use
- If you’re grieving a loss, you can find support to cope and manage
- If you’re experiencing or suspect abuse, report it to 911 and/or your local adult protective services
Caregiver Mental Health
Cleveland Clinic states that 1 in 5 adults in the United States are Caregivers. Caregiving is incredibly selfless and rewarding, but constantly putting others before yourself can lead to burnout and make you more vulnerable to mental health conditions like anxiety and depression. If you’re a Caregiver, try these stress management tips when you have time:
- Ground yourself through breathing and meditation exercises.
- Spend time connecting with friends, family, loved ones, and others in your community.
- If you need help, whether with navigating Caregiving tasks or mental illness symptoms, you’re not alone. You’ll find several local resources below.
