Understanding Activities of Daily Living and Why They Matter

Activities of Daily Living, often called ADLs, are the basic tasks we all do every day to take care of ourselves. These include bathing, dressing, eating, using the bathroom, moving around, and keeping clean.

Most of us don’t think twice about these things. But for older adults or people with illness or injury, these simple tasks can become hard.

Why does this matter? Because being able to do ADLs safely is a big part of staying independent. When someone struggles with these tasks, it may be a sign they need extra support at home.

Paying attention to ADLs helps families know when to step in. With the right help, people can stay safe, keep their dignity, and continue living in the place they feel most comfortable: home.
