Loneliness and Isolation

Social connections play an important role in helping people maintain their overall health and well-being. However, as individuals grow older, they may spend more time alone and become increasingly vulnerable to loneliness and social isolation. Poor health can also make it more difficult to stay socially connected, creating a cycle in which isolation and loneliness may negatively affect both physical and mental well-being. Because of this, maintaining meaningful relationships and regular social interaction can be especially important for older adults. (National Institute on Aging)

Why Should You Care?

Research has shown that loneliness can negatively affect both mental and physical health, increasing the risk of depression, cognitive decline, and conditions such as heart disease. For example, a lack of social interaction has been associated with poorer intellectual function, and can increase the risk of developing dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease. (National Institute on Aging) In contrast, seniors who remain socially active and connected with others often experience better moods, stronger memory, and a greater sense of purpose. Maintaining meaningful relationships can also help older adults feel supported and valued as they age.

What Can You Do?

Sailor Health claims loneliness and isolation in later life can be helped by connecting with others in your community, whether that be volunteering, pursuing interests and hobbies, or addressing mental health issues with a therapist. For your own reference, we recommend you:

  • Stay on your feet: Gentle activities like walking, stretching, or chair yoga can improve mood and overall health.
  • Find and Enjoy hobbies: Reading, gardening, puzzles, and crafts provide meaningful ways to stay engaged.
  • Contact others: Regular calls, video chats, or visits with family and friends can help reduce loneliness.
  • Join community activities: Senior centers, libraries, and faith communities offer opportunities to socialize and meet others.
