Parkinson’s Disease Awareness and Community Support

April is National Parkinson’s Awareness Month, a time dedicated to expanding the understanding, compassion, and support for those living with this chronic disease. At Griswold Home Care for La Jolla, we are committed to supporting individuals and families affected by Parkinson’s disease through education, quality care, and community engagement.

Parkinson’s disease is a neurodegenerative disorder in which brain cells gradually lose the ability to produce dopamine, a neurotransmitter essential for movement, motivation, and coordination. As dopamine levels decline, individuals may experience symptoms such as tremors, rigidity, slowed movement, speech changes, and balance of difficulties. Because Parkinson’s is progressive, symptoms typically worsen over time.

While Parkinson’s most commonly develops around the age of 60, it can occur earlier. Men are slightly higher risk to be affected than women are. Although the exact cause remains unknown, both genetic and environmental factors, such as exposure to certain toxins, may increase the risk.

Parkinson’s disease impacts more than just the individual; it deeply affects families, caregivers, and the broader community. Behind every diagnosis is a person showing resilience as they navigate daily challenges. Supporting someone with Parkinson’s requires not only medical care but also patience, understanding, and compassion.

At Griswold Home Care for La Jolla, our caregivers are trained to support clients with Parkinson’s disease through personalized care plans that focus on safety, mobility assistance, daily living support, and companionship. Through educational programs and opportunities offered by the Jean Griswold Foundation, our team members continue to enhance their skills to serve our clients better.

This month is an opportunity to take action. You can get involved by:

  • Learning more about Parkinson’s disease
  • Supporting organizations like the Parkinson’s Foundation and the Michael J. Fox Foundation
  • Participating in local events hosted by the Parkinson’s Association of San Diego
  • Connecting with caregivers and support services in your community

By raising awareness and supporting one another, we can help create a more informed, compassionate, and supportive environment for those living with Parkinson’s disease.

If you or your loved one needs support, Griswold Home Care for La Jolla is here to help.
