80% of falls that occur in a home happen in the bathroom.

With that in mind, bathtub safety is paramount. January marks National Bath Safety Month, a time to remind ourselves about how dangerous the bathroom can be. This can also be a great time to evaluate the safety of our own bathrooms and take extra precautions. Whether that is installing grab bars, using non-slip floor mats, or even installing a walk-in bathtub.

Seniors and Bathing

Bathing offers a variety of benefits to those of all ages, but especially seniors. Some key benefits include temporary relief from sore joints and muscles, better sleep, improved mental health, cleansing and moisturizing skin, and reduced swelling and inflammation.

While there are many benefits, as we age, the need for daily bathing decreases. As skin becomes drier and more sensitive with age, it may not be in your best interest to take a full bath every day. When a traditional bath is no longer in your best interest or no longer your preference, there are some alternative options:

  • No-rinse soaps and shampoos
  • Bath aid equipment, such as transfer benches, shower chairs, handheld shower heads, nonslip mats, and walk-in baths.

How Can a Walk-in Bath Help?

One of the best alternatives to a traditional bath for seniors is a walk-in bathtub. This is a tub with a watertight door that allows for easy entrances and exits from the tub. Once you’ve closed the door, you can start filling the walk-in bathtub with water. After enjoying your bath, simply drain the water, open the door, and step out of the tub with ease and safety. The key benefit is not worrying about stepping over a high tub wall, something that can be challenging for seniors. More benefits include:

  • They are ADA compliant
  • They reduce the risks of falls
  • Some come with therapeutic features
  • Several health benefits
  • They can fit any design style
  • They help allow you to age in place
  • They typically do not take too long to install
