Breast Cancer Resources in Gilbert & Chandler

Breast Cancer Awareness Month is a chance to show support for the more than 2 million women around the world who are diagnosed with the disease each year.
Raising Awareness of Breast Cancer
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The event began in 1985 as a week-long awareness campaign by the American Cancer Society. They partnered with Imperial Chemical Industries (a British company) to increase awareness. The pink ribbon, tied to the cause, became a mainstay in 1992. The month features campaigns and programs designed to support people diagnosed and their families, educate on the disease, encourage women to go for regular screenings, and raise money for breast cancer research.
Lowering Your Risk
While there are genetic risk factors you, unfortunately, can’t do anything about. There are several risk factors you can control. By doing so, you will lower your risk of developing breast cancer.
- Maintain a healthy weight
- Engage in regular physical activity
- Limit alcohol consumption
- If you are taking hormone replacement therapy or birth control pills, ask your doctor about the risks
- Breastfeeding your children also can lower your risk
