As we age, changes in balance, strength, or stamina can make everyday movement more challenging. The right mobility aid can make a world of difference in safety and independence — and local resources can help you find the best fit.

Choosing the Right Mobility Aid

Before picking a device, consider:

  • Support needed – Mild balance help vs. full support
  • Where it will be used – Indoors, outdoors, stairs, or uneven ground
  • Ease and safety – Weight, brakes, grips, foldability
  • Comfort and fit – Proper height and posture support
  • Cost – New or gently used; insurance coverage

Always get guidance from a physical or occupational therapist (PT/OT) to make sure the device fits your needs and is used safely.

Common Mobility Aids

  • Canes – Help with mild balance issues.
  • Walkers / Rollators – Offer more stability; rollators have wheels and brakes.
  • Wheelchairs / Power scooters – For limited mobility or long distances.
  • Transfer aids – Help move safely between surfaces.
  • Bathroom safety aids – Grab bars, shower chairs, and raised toilet seats to prevent falls.
  • Machine lifts (Hoyer or sit-to-stand lifts) – Provide safe, supported transfers for individuals who can’t bear weight or need full assistance moving between bed, chair, or toilet.
