UV Safety in Delaware County, PA
Category:
Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States.
Happy summer, Delaware County! This UV Safety Awareness Month, we’re spreading the word to take care of your skin. Ultraviolet radiation, or UV, is made up of high-energy UVA and UVB rays. UVA rays are longer and penetrate deeper and can cause wrinkles. UVB rays are the shorter rays that cause sunburns. Prolonged exposure to UVA and UVB rays can cause premature aging, or even skin cancer. Minimize exposure by avoiding the sun’s rays as much as possible, especially during peak hours. Keep reading for more sun safety tips!
What Type of Sunscreen is Best?
Don’t forget sunscreen! It’s important to apply sunscreen any time you’re outdoors. The sun can damage your skin even when it’s cloudy.
- Note that expired sunscreen might not be effective.
- Apply sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher to any exposed skin not covered by clothing. Use a generous amount. Don’t forget your scalp and lips!
- The higher the SPF, the more protection you get from UVB rays that cause sunburns.
- Opt for broad-spectrum sunscreen. This protects against UVA and UVB rays.
- Try to reapply your sunscreen at least every 2 hours. If your skin is getting wet from swimming or sweating, reapply more often.
- Keep in mind that sunscreen doesn’t completely block out UV rays. Wearing a higher- SPF sunscreen doesn’t mean it’s safe to stay out in the sun longer.
What Should I Wear Outside?
If you’re planning to spend time outdoors, consider wearing clothing and accessories that can help protect your skin. Here are some tips from the American Academy of Dermatology Association and the American Cancer Society:
- Clothing: If possible, opt for long-sleeved shirts and full-length pants when spending time in the sun. Lightweight materials can help with comfort and breathability. However, try to avoid fabrics like lace. The sun can penetrate through fabrics with a loose or open weave. Also, keep in mind that darker colors are more protective. Wet clothes might not be as protective. You can even find clothing with ultraviolet protection factor (UPF). UPF reduces the amount of UV rays that penetrate fabric.
- Sunglasses: UV-blocking sunglasses can protect your eyes and the sensitive skin around your eyes. Dark lenses don’t necessarily correlate with more protection – if there’s no label, they might not protect from UV. Look for options that block 99-100% of UVA and UVB rays. Also, larger frames or wraparound glasses can offer more coverage.
- Wide-Brimmed Hat: Hats with 2- to 3-inch brims help cover and protect the eyes, ears, forehead, nose, and scalp. Some hats have holes that don’t offer protection, e.g., mesh hats and straw hats. Also, make sure the brim of the hat is dark and non-reflective.
- Shoes: The more coverage, the better! Avoid open-toe options like flip-flops and sandals.
