Recent surveys reveal that only 57% of people aged 55 and older use sunscreen when exposed to the sun.

According to a March 2024 Consumer Reports Nationally Representative Survey of 2,000 adults. This statistic highlights a significant gap in sun protection among older adults. At Griswold Home Care for Bucks and Montgomery Counties, we believe that this number should be higher and are committed to helping older adults enjoy the sunshine safely.

As summer unfolds and many of us look forward to spending time outdoors, it’s important to remember that the sun’s rays can be harmful, especially to seniors. Proper sun protection is essential to safeguard your skin and overall health, especially for seniors who have more years of sun exposure. If responsible safety precautions are not taken when in the sun, skin damage can occur. Read on to learn more about the risks and safety measures to take during this summer’s heat.

Understanding the Risks

Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States, and seniors are at a higher risk due to prolonged sun exposure over the years. The three most common types of skin cancer are:

  • Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC): The most common form, often appears as a slightly transparent bump on the skin that doesn’t heal. Most cases result from long-term exposure to UV rays from sunlight, without proper sunscreen use.
  • Squamous Cell Carcinoma: A common form of skin cancer that starts in squamous cells and is usually not life-threatening. If left untreated, it can cause serious complications. Most cases are caused by excessive UV radiation.
  • Melanoma: The deadliest form, and a kind of cancer that starts in the melanocytes, the cells that produce melanin (skin pigment). Melanoma commonly forms on the skin on the arms, back, face, and legs, but can even form in the eyes. The first signs often include a change in an existing mole or the development of a new, unusual growth.
Signs to Watch For

It’s important to check moles consistently for indications of skin cancer. Watch for moles with these characteristics:

  • Asymmetrical shape: One half looks different from the other.
  • Changes in color: Unusual growths that display multiple colors or patterns.
  • Size increase: A mole larger than a ¼ inch or a mole that’s growing.
  • New symptoms: Check for changes in symptoms such as itchiness or bleeding.
  • Unusual border: Check for moles with notched borders or uneven.
Heat Exhaustion and Heat Stroke

Aside from skin cancer, heat-related illnesses are something to always be cautious of. Be aware of the signs and symptoms that can occur when outdoors for heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Signs of heat exhaustion can include muscle cramps, headaches, and nausea. Heat stroke is very serious and occurs when the body can no longer control its temperature. Symptoms of heat stroke include high body temperature, confusion, and seizures.

Sun Safety Tips

Now that the risks are clear, it’s important to stay proactive and on top of safety to protect skin. Follow these tips:

  1. Use Sunscreen: Apply a broad-spectrum SPF of 30 or higher. Reapply sunscreen every 2 hours.
  2. Cover Up: Wear protective clothing, including light-colored and loose-fitting clothing, long-sleeved shirts, pants, brimmed hats, and sunglasses.
  3. Stay in the Shade: Be mindful of the sun, especially during peak hours, and take breaks from direct sunlight.
  4. Hydrate: Our bodies constantly need water; drink plenty to keep skin healthy.
  5. Regular Skin Checks: Monitor yourself and loved ones for any skin changes. Be aware of your skin and your body.
