March is National Reading Month!

While many of us wish to make reading more of a priority, we can sometimes forget what makes it so important. There are several benefits, especially for seniors battling cognitive decline. In this post we will discuss some resources that can help you and your loved ones get back into reading or other cognitive activities!

A study done in 2021 for Neurology, the most widely read and highly cited peer-reviewed neurology journal, found that consistent cognitive activity, like reading or doing puzzles, can delay the onset of Alzheimer’s disease by 5 years among those aged 80 years and over.

It is vital for those suffering from dementia-related diseases to do what they can to combat it. Other studies have shown that senior avid readers experience roughly 30% less memory loss than other seniors who do not read.

Local Resources

There is never a bad time to read, even if you don’t fit that demographic! During this National Reading Month, make it a priority as it will strengthen your cognitive muscles. Getting a library card is free, and it is a great way to connect with your community. Learn about some local libraries below:

Are you located in Montgomery County but have mobility issues or don’t have a library in your proximate area? Good news! The Montgomery County-Norristown Public Library, located in Norristown, offers “bookmobile” and outreach services. This is a great way for seniors and others with mobility issues to keep reading part of their lives, especially if the libraries in your area are a sizeable distance away.

If you are in the Blue Bell area, check out the Wissahickon Valley Public Library. In the Lafayette Hill or Plymouth Meeting areas? Head to William Jeanes Memorial Library and Nicholas and Athena Karabots Center for Learning.

Not close enough to be able to easily reach the libraries mentioned above? Here are some others throughout Bucks and Montgomery counties:

Whether you or a senior loved one is looking to get into reading, the benefits of cognitive exercise apply at any age. It can even be a way to connect and bond if you decide to read similar things. While boosting cognition, you can also boost your and your loved one’s mental health. By utilizing your public libraries, this comes at no cost to you!
