Did you know that nearly 1 in 5 adults in the United States are Caregivers?

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, it’s especially important to recognize the mental health of those who give so much to others, our Caregivers. Read on to learn about signs, statistics, and how Griswold can help those battling with mental health in Willow Grove, Bryn Mawr, Conshohocken, Blue Bell and other surrounding areas.

According to the CDC, about 53 million Americans provide unpaid care to a family member or loved one, while juggling jobs, households, and their own health needs. While caregiving can be deeply rewarding, it also puts Caregivers at a higher risk for anxiety, depression, and burnout.

The work Caregivers do is incredibly important, but it can come at the cost of their own well-being. Although caring for loved ones often comes first, prioritizing your own mental health is essential to living your healthiest life.

Signs of Burnout

More than 60% of Caregivers experience symptoms of burnout. Burnout can result from prolonged stress and poor mental and physical health habits. Signs of burnout can look like:

  • Lack of interest in loved ones and hobbies
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Changes in appetite
  • Neglect of one’s own needs
  • Depression and anxiety, including emotional and physical exhaustion
Caregivers and Depression

It is not uncommon for Caregivers to experience symptoms such as those related to depression and anxiety. There are two types of depression that commonly impact Caregivers: Dysthymic Disorder (DO) and Major Depression. DO can be mild, but also persistent, causing symptoms like feelings of sadness and anxiety. Major Depression is more severe as its symptoms include feelings of worthlessness, which severely impacts a Caregiver’s ability to work and function. It is important for Caregivers to acknowledge their physical and mental health condition and to not be afraid to ask for support when they need it.

Managing Your Mental Health

Mental health improvement can positively impact your physical health, and vice versa. Mental practices like box breathing, meditation, and other mindful exercises can contribute to over well-being. Physical activities that can also support your mental health include regular exercise, eating energizing foods, and getting enough sleep.

Staying on top of your mental health while caring for others can be difficult to prioritize. But you are not alone, there are avenues of relief, such as therapy, support groups and even emotional support from loved ones. All are all examples of self-care that can positively impact your mental health.
