Cancer Prevention Month in Bucks & Montgomery Counties
Category:
February is National Cancer Prevention Month, a reminder that many cancers can be prevented through healthy lifestyle choices and early detection.
At Griswold Home Care for Bucks & Montgomery Counties, we stand with those facing cancer and other health challenges. This month, we want to share how cancer can be prevented, connect you with local resources, and show how our Caregivers can support you and your loved ones.
Cancer Prevention
There were more than two million new cases of cancer in the United States in 2025, excluding non-melanoma skin cancers, according to the American Cancer Society. The good news? According to the World Health Organization, between 30-50% of all cancers can be prevented through healthy lifestyle choices. Here are key changes we encourage you to consider that can reduce your cancer risk:
- Physical Activity: Regular exercise and an active lifestyle can help reduce the risk of several types of cancer. It is recommended for older adults to exercise for at least 30 minutes each day.
- Sun Safety: Wear sunscreen with SPF 30+ or higher, stay in the shade, and wear protective clothing to reduce your risk of skin cancer.
- Regular Screening: Early detection of cancer saves lives. Recommended screenings include mammograms, colonoscopies, and lung cancer scans for high-risk individuals.
- Healthy Diet: Eat a variety of fruits and vegetables. Limit the number of processed foods and sugary drinks or snacks.
- Tobacco: Smoking is one of the leading causes of cancer. If you smoke, quitting is recommended. If you don’t, avoid secondhand smoke exposure.
