Special Needs Registry
Broward County has a registry to allow residents with special needs to register with their local emergency management agency. By doing so, you can guarantee you will be able to receive assistance during a disaster.
The shelters available through the registry are perfect for those who require in-home care services. Services such as live-in care or dementia care. Family members and Caregivers are encouraged to accompany you at these shelters during emergencies. If you sign up for the registry through Griswold, you will have two cots set aside for you. One for you, and the other for your referred Caregiver.
Another benefit of signing up for the registry includes transportation to and from your shelter. Either Broward County Transit or Paratransit will come and pick you and your referred Caregiver up from your home.
Griswold is Here to Help
During initial intake, we review options for the client to join the special needs registry through the state of Florida. They will pick them up and take them to a hurricane shelter with two cots, one for the client and one for their referred Caregiver. Should they elect to join the registry, we provide the paperwork and can assist in filling it out if needed. If they choose not to be a part of the registry, they can change their mind at any time.
Every May, we call every client to see if there have been any changes to their emergency management plan. We also ask if they would like to join the special needs registry for the upcoming hurricane season.
When a hurricane is forecasted to hit our area, we call all our clients to ask what their plan is. We ask if they would be ok if our referred Caregiver is unable to make it to their house. If they are not, we ask if they would like to arrange live-in care during and after the hurricane. This allows us to avoid weather-related travel issues from our referred Caregivers.
