Did you know that 9/10 people who have kidney disease are unaware they have it?

Kidney disease is an urgent health dilemma and is the 8th leading cause of death in the U.S. With March marking National Kidney Month, this is the perfect time to raise awareness of how aging can impact your kidneys and how to better manage your kidney health.

How Does Aging Impact My Kidneys?

As you age, your body undergoes a lot of normal changes. This also happens with your kidneys and bladder. Your kidney tissue decreases, leading to kidneys that don’t function as well as they used to. Blood vessels supplying the kidneys may also become hardened, leading to the kidneys filtering blood at a slower rate. Your bladder walls also become stiffer, meaning you cannot hold as much urine as before. In a healthy aging person, declining kidney function occurs very slowly. Other illnesses and conditions, however, can increase the rate of kidney deterioration.

Aging increases your risk of several kidney and bladder-related issues such as:

  • Bladder control problems
  • UTIs
  • Chronic kidney disease

What Can I Do to Manage My Kidney Health?

Starting a healthy lifestyle can help prevent you from developing kidney disease. It can also help you manage kidney disease from progressing, should you already have a diagnosis. Try adding some of the following habits to your routine:

  • Meet with your health care team regularly
  • Manage your blood pressure and blood glucose levels
  • Take medication as prescribed
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Try to reduce your exposure to stress
  • Exercise regularly
  • Get a good night’s sleep
  • Quit smoking
