What is Hippotherapy?

Hippotherapy refers to how therapy professionals use the movement of horses as a therapy tool. This evidence-based practice is used by occupational therapists, physical therapists, and speech-language pathology professionals.

Through clinical reasoning in the purposeful manipulation of equine movement they engage sensory, neuromotor and cognitive systems to promote functional outcomes.

You may be wondering, “why horses?” Well, an average horse walks about 100 steps per minute. This means that 5 minutes on a walking horse can be 500 neuro motor inputs to the patient. Incorporating this under the direction of a therapist, can provide the patient the opportunity for complex motor learning.
