For example, the normal breathing rate for older adults living independently is 12-18 breaths per minute, but for those needing long-term care, it can be 16-25 breaths per minute. Lung function, in particular, can slightly decrease as we age and ultimately affect the breathing rate.
What Can Affect Normal Elderly Respiratory Rate?
As stated above, the normal respiratory rate in elderly can be affected by lung function. The following changes can occur to the lungs of older adults:
- Airways can become narrower. Muscles near the airways may also lose some of their ability to keep them fully open, making it harder for air to move through.

- Practice pursed-lip breathing. Pursed-lip breathing can help keep the airways open longer and make it easier to empty your lungs. Slowly breathe in through your nose, then purse your lips and breathe out slowly through your mouth, making your exhalation last about twice as long as your inhalation.
