Wellness involves more than your physical lifestyle.

National Wellness Month was created by Live Love Spa in 2018 to inspire a self-care movement. While celebrations come to a close with the end of the month approaching, you and your loved ones can promote wellness by incorporating acts of self-care into your lives all year long.

The Dimensions of Wellness

The Global Wellness Institute’s definition of wellness is: “The active pursuit of activities, choices, and lifestyles that lead to a state of holistic health.” Wellness involves more than just physical health, and it is not a once-and-done activity. Practicing wellness requires active effort over time. Several dimensions of wellness contribute to living a holistic and healthy life:

  • Physical Wellness: Try to eat a nutritious diet, stay hydrated, get enough sleep, and exercise consistently to promote wellness of the physical body.
  • Mental Wellness: Physical wellness can contribute to mental wellness, and vice versa. Activities involving learning and creativity can be beneficial, as well as practicing mindfulness and participating in support groups. It’s also important to take breaks, and don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it.
  • Emotional Wellness: Process and express your emotions, manage behaviors, and understand when others need to as well. Take time for yourself and practice gratitude when you can, as these practices can contribute to emotional resilience.
  • Social Wellness: Connections with other people and communities, as well as connecting with yourself, can contribute to wellness. Try a new group skill or hobby, volunteer, or reach out to loved ones to support this.

Other dimensions include environmental, intellectual, occupational, and spiritual wellness.
